1994:Melomania

My name is zack. I play guitar in a band called The Author and the Illustrator. Our record came out with old songs on January 6th, 2011. We're a loud, sad, midwest rock band. We use some guitar pedals and our drummer made his own drumset.

The Future of The Author and the Illustrator:

  • Show on February 25th in Springfield, Missouri with the Whurlitzers at a frat house at Missouri State. More details on that later
  • 3 new songs premiered at that show
  • Our old vocalist left a while back to go to college.
  • Our old guitarist is working on training to join the navy. He will be leaving for the Navy in October. (By the way, he got the highest score on the Logic test. He is a fucking genius.)
  • We have two new members. Tyler Butler will be singing and playing guitar, and Layton V. Dorman will be playing guitar.
  • We will be recording 5-6 songs on March 9th-march 12th.
  • Those will be released sometime late march, early april (hopefully)
  • House show sometime in march
  • Jessica Vaughn’s birthday (I think?) in march
  • Future shows inside and outside of the Kansas City area with some really incredible bands.
  • June 16th we are playing Rexfest with a ton of great KC bands (if it pans as planned)

Once again, we are pushing and making incredible progress.  We’ve been playing with this new line-up for less than 2 months and we have 4 songs that are 90% complete (small tweaks will occur as time goes on.)  We are going to have music released before we REALLY start fleshing out the shows, which I think will be really helpful. I want to do all of the things we never did, but should have done (band pictures, playing shows in more places than Kansas City, Music to give people at EVERY show, Trying to get shows with bigger bands, Possibilities of touring).  I want to get ourselves to the next level.

Our new guitarist layton is getting a new amp (vox ac30 head with vox or avatar cab) very soon, and our vocalist is going to get a combo ac30.  Both of which will be obtained before recording our “ep” (if you will) and I am sooo excited to see what kinds of awesome tone-age we will get out of that.

This new group is much more experimental in the sense of song writing. Things don’t feel expected, but we don’t leave you feeling empty handed. It’s not different for the sake of being different. The music is different, but still definitely resembles the author and the illustrator.  It’s 3/5 the same, so of course. But the music sounds about 3/5 the same as it used to.  Less effects heavy, more textures and layers on the guitar end, Cliff’s bass lines are getting groovier and more badass with each song, Drums are getting more powerful and unique with each drumbeat.  Vocal intensity is pushed to a new level.  More aux percussion parts (toms, tambourines, shakers etc).  It’s all very interesting.  The midwest kansas city sound shared by bands such as The Appleseed Cast and The Life and Times comes out, combined with more raw rock bands like Colour Revolt or Paper Rival.  On top of all of it, is a dash of O’brother and Thrice explosiveness.  I know it’s lame to compare your band to other bands, but I really don’t give a shit.

I am excited to share what we have made with everyone.  I haven’t felt this musically creative in MONTHS.  I can’t even explain how satisfying it’s become as of late. The work is all coming together.
